Dog for Life

So the lovely writer Anne Bowen and I were talking about dogs, because she has a picture book coming out in the spring that was inspired by her dog River, who died a few months ago. She misses him terribly, because he was, for her, that special dog. The Dog for Life. You know. The one who gets to you the most out of all the fabulous dogs who get to you.

Who was that dog for you? Or cat? Because, yeah, there are Cats for Life, too. In spite of what my son Dylan thinks.

Haha. I loved that last line. It's so true, that he would disagree. But I agree, Ann.

Jack. German-Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix. My first dog. He looked like a wolf without a tail. (The people we got him from had docked it.) He scared the crap out of people all the time, but he was a sweetheart. He raised our cat from a kitten. She still meows like a bark and comes running when you call her like a dog would. And she gets sick when she eats cat food - she has to have dog food.

Anyway. When he did I must have cried for a week, literally. I was only a kid, fifteen or sixteen. But he's definitely got the title of Dog for Life.

Mmm, Tiber. I miss him so much. I remember watching him on summer mornings sit on the deck with his eyes closed, head tilted, sniffing the air. Total zen-dog. And he worshiped Trevor. I hope we can have another lab like that again!

I miss Bess, the gerbil, who ate her young and maimed her husband, YouYou. What a woman.

MacTavish, our miniature schnauzer. He roamed the neighborhood (this was back in days before leash laws) and often came up the front steps with a hot dog in his mouth looking like a little old man with a stogie.

I'm pretty sure the dog for life is Bruiser. He speaks to my soul.

Aggie, my best friend. Julie and I watched Marley & Me a week or two after we put Aggie down. Wish someone told me they put Marley down at the end. I cried for a solid hour after. The bond between a boy and his dog is borderline sacred. Yes, I said dog, not cat
