So I do a lot of my grocery shopping at the downtown Smith's, which has a wide-ranging clientele. I mean, you see every kind there--from elderly couple missionaries to guys doing drug deals in the parking lot. Humanity on display!
Anyway, early this morning a nice-looking young woman walked out of the store, carrying a big box of doughnuts that I assumed she was taking to work because she was dressed like someone who spends her days in an office. As we passed one another she looked at me and said, "The world better watch out because I am going to start standing up for myself."
I can't remember the last time a stranger carrying a box of doughnuts said this to me. And, seriously, I want to know her story.

This made me laugh out loud!! I would have followed her with you to find out more, which is why Lucy, we don't live in the same place. We would need a fund just for bail money.
And by the way this line....."Turns out that books read us as much as we read them."
Is BRILLIANT!!!! I want to be you when I grow up
I hope you're beginning the novel that has this young woman as a character in it RIGHT NOW.
What Lisa B said. This is definitely a novel.
Today I was out for a jog with my youngest in a stroller by Utah State campus. It was about 10 am. A car full of nicely dressed young men from India stopped the car and asked me frantically if I had seen two dogs running around. I hadn't and they took off. Tires screeching, even.
Can that be in the novel too? It seemed weird.
"Humanity on Display!" Brilliant description, and places where you can see that are the best places to be. Airports, courts, lobbies of county detention centers, and apparently, Smith's.
On a side note--were the doughnuts just the typical Smith's bakery brand (no shame there), or were they Dunford doughnuts chocolate on chocolate (superb)?
I feel like amazing, random things like this happen more to writers than non-writers. And, I truly hope girl with doughnuts shows the world what's what.
I think she was going to eat all the donuts by herself and to HELLo with anyone who had a problem with it. Or maybe I'm just wishing I had a donut right now.
I hope her day was awesome! And I need to walk around saying that to random people too.
