Column help

I may do a column on mothers-in-law as in what makes a good one.  Thoughts, y'all?

I've only had one and she is great! I won't list all of her qualities here, but she is TOLERANT and PATIENT--such a good listener. It does NOT matter what issues we face, she has a dozen different ways of saying, "I know you two will make the best decision." She never suggests what we should do, she never tells us what she would LIKE us to do...she just patiently watches us and cheers us on. Her son left the Church in which she raised him and joined another and because of this, she was unable to be in the room for our wedding ceremony and I have NEVER heard her say anything about that. She just mentions once in awhile what a great day we had with family and friends. Such an example.

Non-interfering--a son-in-law said this about me, and it made me (a) pleased, because he clearly saw this as a good thing, and (b) worried that perhaps I wasn't showing that I cared by being obnoxious? Such a quandary.

The only mother-in-law I've had was just perfect, and that's because she's an easy-going, happy person who was prepared to think the best of people. I still have what seems to me to be a good relationship, based on how it seems when we see each other, even though her son and I are no longer married.

I hope to (continue to?) be a good MiL by having a rewarding life of my own, striving not to be over-invested in my grown children's decisions, and by loving being around my children and their spouses when I can.

I studied Naomi once and learned some very interesting tidbits about that most famous of m.i.l.s. I don't usually include a link in a comment, but if you want to read about what I learned, here ya go. =)

This question reminds me of the Jerry Seinfeld bit. He states that men want the same thing from their women as their underwear, i.e. a little bit of support and a little bit of freedom. Seems to fit for mothers-in-law. We all could use a little bit of support from our Mothers-in-law, but we also want the freedom to make our own way. I dare you to print that Mothers-in-law are like underwear

I always wonder what the deleted comments are...don't suppose you could do a column on that. Are people just nasty or what?

Great comments already here. I don't currently have a mother in law. I did have one for ten years, however.

I've been divorced from her son for about twenty years. We see each other at family functions- bridal showers, weddings, baby blessings and the like. She calls me her "retained daughter in law."

She and I are both gardeners. That explains a lot.
