Soda: the New Smoking

I may or may not write a column about this.  But I am interested in what a lightning rod soda (i.e. "pop," if you grew up in Utah) consumption has become.   The snarkiest comments I get from readers often involve my Dr. Pepper habit.  Because I drink soda I am, in some people's eyes, an obese white trash loser of flabby moral character who abuses children and destroys rain forests whenever I get the chance.   And it seems like the more progressive a person's politics are, the more likely he or she is to feel this way.  INTERESTINGLY.

And you know what my response to this is?  Pass me another can, honey.

I KNOW. I have mostly stopped drinking soda mainly because I have so many other bad habits (POTATO CHIPS I AM LOOKING AT YOU), but for crying out loud. My husband, who is one of those people who walks lightly on the earth, is kinder and a better listener and has better character and every other good thing, pretty much, that could be said of a human being, drinks Coke. With sugar. As much as he wants to. And you know what? So what? He's in good health, is active, and blah blah blah. Just: leave people alone. If you don't want to drink soda, don't. And don't give it to your kids in mass quantities, fine. But let my friend Ann and my husband the historian drink their soda without your judge-y mcjudginess! Let my people go!

I do feel this way too sometimes. When people smugly ask for just ice-water to my many refills of diet coke. But, it's just so good.

Especially with a cheeseburger.

I think you should improve your moral character by giving up the irresponsibility of drinking Dr. P with sugar. Come to the light, bright, right side of soda consumption and drink Diet Dr. P. Its a most satisfying way to get 44oz of cool, non-caloric, recently LDS-approved nutrition.

It's even worse with fat folk comme moi. "Look at him! How can he eat that potato chip/drink that latte? Has he looked at himself in the mirror, lately?" Damn you, Judge-y McJudge! You're my least favorite member of the court. Well, okay, Scalia.

"recently LDS-approved nutrition." Ha ha ha. And that BYU official who said they've never had any requests for diet Coke at BYU. Makes me fall down laughing.

I just spent a week tending to a-dorable grandbaby boys in Seattle, and when I arrived I found not a single Dr.Pepper and no ice in the fridge. Next day I braved the (hilly) peninsula in a standard transmission with two babies and foraged for my very own 12 pack and a bag of ice. At nap and bedtime it was soooo worth it.
