These are my favorites to read to middle school kids (who love picture books, but pretend they don't): "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" by Maya Angelou and illustrated by Jean-Michel Basquiat; "One" by Kathryn Otoshi; "The Cow That Went Oink" by Bernard Most; "I Hate English" by Ellen Levine and Steve Bjorkman. My favorite just for me is "Fanny's Dream" by Caralyn and Mark Buehner.
